The battle for East Anglian football supremacy will be rekindled later this month when Norwich City travel to Ipswich Town for the first Old Farm derby of the season.

But die-hard fans of the two Championship teams have gone head to head on the pitch already as part of a charity match which has been played out in an Australian park.

For the first time ever, the Australasian branches of both clubs did battle to claim bragging rights Down Under at Sydney’s Centennial Park on Saturday with the Tractor Boys winning on penalties after a pulsating 5-5 draw.

Supporters flew in from cities across Australia and New Zealand – including Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide – for the match which helped raise money for three charities - Norwich Community Sports Foundation, the Australian mental health charity Beyond Blue and the George Woodward Fund.

Mark Larwood, co-founder of Canaries Down Under, tweeted after the match, “Massive congratulations to all those who helped make today great”.

There was also some suggestion the rivalry might be rekindled next year.
