A movie shot in north Norfolk has come “home” to signal its public release – and the dawn of a new digital era at a seaside theatre.
In Love with Alma Cogan was filmed on and around Cromer Pier last winter, and features local screen star Roger Lloyd Pack as central character Norman – a theatre manager battling with council bureaucrats over the future of the venue.
On Wednesday night it was screened in the Pavilion to a 200-strong audience of local cast, extras and supporters, including people from the lifeboat station and theatre itself.
And last night at a gala evening at Sheringham Little Theatre it ushered in a new digital cinema projection system which is enabling the venue to revive its big screen programme.
It was attended by one of the cast, Keith Barron, who plays Cedric – an ally to Norman in his battle with red tape and pressures to commercialise the pier, which includes a Full Monty-style routine by local fishermen.
Co-producer Anwen Rees-Myers from Capriol Films, based at Brinton near Holt, said the film was a quirky romantic comedy which had music and a theme of not giving up as people grew older.
It would appeal to the kind of audiences who enjoyed The King’s Speech and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and who liked to support British cinema, she added.
It had been screened a few times around the globe at festivals as far away as Canada – where it won an award – and was due to be seen soon by a film society in Ventura, California.
The film was now getting “fantastic” responses from local audiences ahead of a more general release, she added.
Public screenings begin with a two-day run at Sheringham Little Theatre on October 5 and 6.
There is a special showing at Cinema City in Norwich on October 17 at 6pm featuring a question and answer session by Roger Lloyd Pack. There are then further screenings from October 19-25 at various times.
