Diss river clean up

A group dedicated to the preservation and improvement of a section of a Norfolk river will soon be celebrating its first birthday and has a number of plans in store for the future to make the area more attractive.

The Diss River Care group, part of the broader River Waveney Trust, was set up to oversee the section of the Waveney which runs through Diss behind the Morrison and Tesco stores in Victoria Road.

As part of their work, the group has organised a number of clean-ups to remove litter from the area and to help monitor non-native species such as Himalayan Balsam and floating Pennywort. And on September 30, the volunteers held an open morning displaying information and photographs of the maintenance work to coincide with World Rivers Day.

A number of ideas have been mooted for possible improvements to the river in the future, including the creation of “Pocket Parks,” where visitors could stop to relax and have a picnic – and the possibility of creating a long distance footpath link-up between Diss and Scole, including Redgrave, Lopham Fen and Oulton Broad. The group works closely with other agencies and experts, such as the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, to carry out the improvements and actively participates in local events, such as in June when a float from Diss Rivercare was entered into the town’s carnival.

Next Wednesday, October 31, the organisation will be celebrating its first birthday with a meeting at the Diss Youth and Community Centre in Shelfanger Road, starting at 7.30pm.
