The painted postbox is in Station Road South, close to the Railway Tavern pub run by the swimmer’s aunt.

A Royal Mail gold stamp has also been produced to honour the teenager’s gold medal triumph in the women’s 200m freestyle S14 on Sunday.

Applegate, who turned 16 less than a fortnight ago, swam a perfectly controlled race to claim victory at her Paralympics debut.

She was in the bronze medal position with 50m to go but produced a storming final leg to overhaul her rivals and was pulling further ahead when she touched the wall in two minutes 12.63 seconds.

The win came a month after she had an operation on her foot, putting her participation in doubt.

Not only did she compete but her time was a Paralympic record.

The teenager, who has learning difficulties, has won support from some of Norfolk’s best known names and organisations.

On social networking site Twitter, Norwich City Football Club said: “Congratulations to Gorleston’s Jessica Jane Applegate on her Paralympic gold medal for @ParalympicsGB. Well done!”

Jarrold Store said: “Congratulations to Norfolk swimmer Jessica-Jane Applegate who picked up GOLD in the 200m freestyle!”

BBC Radio Norfolk presenter Chris Goreham said: “Thrilling to commentate on Jessica Jane Applegate’s gold on @BBCNorfolk. Another great @ParalympicsGB moment #gorlestongold.”

The teenager’s school, Ormiston Venture Academy in Gorleston, expressed its pride in the teenager, tweeting: “GOLD! @OrmistonVenture student Jess Applegate wins 200m freestyle... amazing work, inspirational #londonparalympics.”

And she has also won support from those who support people with autism and learning difficulties.

AmbitiousAboutAutism said: “Big congratulations from all of us to Jessica-Jane Applegate for winning the 200m swimming gold at the #Paralympics yesterday!”
