Norfolk fun day to raise cash for canines in need of care
15:00 30 August 2014
A charity which rescues dogs who have been neglected and abused is holding a fun day on Sunday to raise money.
Safe Rescue, a nationwide charity formed in Norfolk in 2011, rescues dogs from the UK and countries such as Romania and Serbia, bringing them to the UK where it tries to find new homes for them.
The fun day, where there will be a bouncy castle and stalls, will be held at Smallburgh Village Hall, from noon.
Visitors will also be able to enter their dogs into competitions. Categories include the cutest puppy and the waggiest tail.
There will also be the chance for would-be owners to meet some of the dogs who are looking for homes.
Rehoming coordinator Kelly Hare said: “The event we had last year raised £600.
“But, most importantly, we found homes for 12 dogs we had taken to the event, which was great.”
The charity relies on people fostering the rescued dogs until permanent homes can be found. It currently has foster homes across Norfolk, in places including Norwich, Great Yarmouth and North Walsham.
The charity has so far raised £90,000, mainly through donations, and is now looking in Norfolk for a centre to make its permanent home where dogs can wait until foster homes become available.
“We’ve seen some horrible cases and you wouldn’t believe the situations some dogs were in before they came to us. It’s horrendous. We want to help these dogs out and find them homes.”
Recently, East Is East and Calendar Girls actress Linda Bassett adopted Dust, a dog who was living on the streets of Romania.
Dust was brought to Mrs Hare’s home in Norfolk from a friend who is a rescuer in Romania. Although Mrs Bassett had followed Dust’s progress on Facebook, she had visited Mrs Hare to adopt another dog, only to fall in love with Dust.
Mrs Hare added: “So much effort goes into these dogs, but it’s worth it. People think all rescue dogs have issues, and that’s not the case.
“I have a house full of them, and they are very sociable.”
Tables for the event are £5. For enquiries, please telephone 07810 251898. For further information about the charity, just visit saferescue.org
