Hopes to turn Norfolk into a world leader in medical research took a step forward after plans were submitted to develop Norwich Research Park (NRP).
Bullen Developments want to build up to 100,000 square metres of offices and labs for mainly medical research on land next to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
The development, off Hethersett Lane and Watton Road, would be known as NRP South and Bullen want outline planning permission for the site, which would allow development to take place on the land over the next 14 years.
They are also seeking approval to change access to the site.
The application requests permission for building heights, site density and landscaping.
Mike Carpenter, pictured, from Bidwells, who are representing Bullen Developments, said: “We have to demonstrate that we can develop the site in an appropriate way.”
If planning permission is granted by South Norfolk councillors it will mean the developers can quickly build offices and labs as and when companies agree to move to the park.
Mr Carpenter added: “Outline planning permission is essential because we are competing in a world marketplace and these companies need to move quickly.
“It is very important to the industry.”
Councillors are expected to decide on the plans in mid-January.

We should be welcoming this with open arms. I'd like my own daughter - studying sciences in another part of the country - to have the chance to work in Norwich. We do have talented children in Norfolk, let's give them a chance to remain in their own county once they have finished their studies!

Of course "V", the only people employed will be highly qualified... it's not like a research park will need administrators, maintenance people, IT support or cleaners, is it? Or any of the UEA graduates in chemistry, biology, environmental science, pharmacy...? It seems you can't win - build houses and the cry is "but where will these people work?" Build business and suddenly the cry is "but who will work there?" I say thank goodness for the prospect of long-lasting development providing real jobs, not more Asda minimum wage, minimum hours rubbish.

V - that could have been an argument for not building the research park in the first place: yet it's there! Where did the existing people who work do research there all come from do you think? You seem to be suggesting we should not be attracting organisations here (or anywhere, using your logic, for that matter). Using your logic and extending back in time, we'd all still be working the land, making cloth or tanning leather for a living (and they would have been advanced industries at some time). It would be crazy not to take up these opportunities. As I said on another story on here today: Build it, and they will come!

And where are they going to get the staff ?. No qualified people round here. The laughable university would rather teach rubbish courses than have proper courses that would probably help people get jobs. Probably be age discriminatory as well.
