Plans to build a new supermarket, restaurant and petrol station in Taverham were given the go-ahead today with 10 out of 14 councillors voting in favour of the new complex.

The site, at Taverham Nursery Centre on Fir Covert Road, is to be transformed into a 45,000sq ft supermarket, a 12 pump filling station and a “lifestyle leisure unit”, with a cookery school, offices and shops, and a new restaurant.

Developers Scott Properties said this will bring more business to the existing garden centre, together with hundreds of new jobs for the area.

The 5.2-acre development is within an area of landscape value and beyond Taverham’s current settlement limits.

Councillors at Broadland District Council’s planning meeting delegated authority to approve the scheme to their head of planning.

But they did express concerns about the additional petrol station, which they said could take business away from Taverham’s four existing filling stations.

Wayne Powell, who lives opposite the site and spoke at the meeting, had asked: “Why another supermarket? We have supermarkets within a five minute driver from here, and many now offer home delivery services.”

  • It seems supermarkets will be as corner shops of yesteryear just around the corner! Let them battle it out,the survival of the fittess, and competition is always best for the consumer in any case
