The city council gave the supermarket chain permission this morning to sell alcohol from 6am until midnight for a shop on St Stephens Street.

In the licensing application Sainsbury’s stated it would have 24-hour opening hours, but at the licensing sub-committee today the store said it only expected to open from 7am to 11pm.

It will be allowed to sell alcohol during that time, but councillors placed a condition on the store meaning it can not sell beers and ciders stronger that 6.5pc apart from speciality drinks.

Millets and Cardzone on numbers 9 to 13 on St Stephens Street will be replaced by the Sainsbury’s Local store in 2014.
