Eight months ago Blossom Blois worked on the checkouts at Sainsbury’s.

Harbouring a passion for music, Blossom would listen to her favourite tracks during the 45-minute walk to work.

But after a conversation with her close friend, the 25-year-old has taken the plunge and followed her dreams to open her own record store. “Walking to work became my favourite part of the day,” she said. “I love music – there’s something out there for everyone.” In August last year, Blossom Records was born when she set up a stall on Norwich Market with her close friend, Adi Walder. But it was a conversation in January that inspired Blossom to sell some of her most treasured possessions in order to raise enough money and open her own record store in Bridewell Alley.

“Adi asked me what I really wanted to do and this is it,” she said. “There isn’t anything else I would rather do.”

They scoured car boot sales and eBay, where they collected 3,000 vinyl records.

The pair sold treasured possessions, including Blossom’s beloved Gibson Thunderbird bass guitar and diamonds which were gifts for her 18th and 21st birthdays, to raise enough money to invest in the shop. “We have been living on porridge,” Blossom said. “But none of this would have been possible without my grandmother, Kathleen, who believed in us.” The shop will sell vinyl records and vintage clothing.

Blossom, who has a first class honours degree in visual studies from Norwich University of the Arts, added: “We want to make people smile. There will be a sofa and it will be a place where people can come and listen to music. I want it to be a place where people can find themselves.” Adi praised the traders in Norwich Lanes who have welcomed them with open arms.

“There is a lot of passion behind the business,” he said. “We have manufactured something from nothing. It will be a place where people can dress how they want and where people can feel comfortable being who they are. We want it to be a place where people can be inspired.”

Blossom, who lives above the shop in Bridewell Alley with Adi, said: “If I can do it, anyone can.”

Blossom Records is due to open next week.

  • Tell us where you live nrg and we will come round and steal your TV , stereo , car etc. Or in your language " share " them with others. Pirate Bay are a bunch of crooks who deprive artists , many of whom have modest income , of royalties they need to help pay the rent. Archant newspapers should not be allowing you to promote and advertise a criminal outfit.....which is why your posts on this subject will continue to be removed..

  • Pirate Bay is a criminal , illegal outfit whose founders were quite rightly sent to prison in Sweden . If everyone used the services of these crooks ( who breach copyright and pay no fees to the artists ) there would be NO music industry at all. Archant newspapers should not be allowing half wits like nrg to promote the activities of thieves and prison fodder like Pirate Bay.

  • There used to be some good record shops in the Lanes - there was Andy's and what was the other one -Backs? It was just a stones throw from Bridewell Alley and you could get your gig tickets there. Anyway, good luck!

  • Cold, you need to listen in flac, I binned (charity shop) most of my vinyl after ripping and converting them to flac. dBpoweramp does the biz, while cd's are ripped by Exact Audio Copy. 2TB of flac floating around on a cloud or in torrents, is far tidier than a zillion stacks of vinyl and cd's

  • Some not so helpful comments on here, but at least they are following their dream rather than just taking the easy way out. I hope you succeed. I was recently listening to some digital Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin, and thought there was something wrong with the player, then I put a proper album on a turntable and everything came alive again.

  • What a bad time to open a Record shop especially when the likes of HMV are going under. You will need to have some very unique products as you have a lot of 2nd hand records shops which are more established .
