The new head of the county’s museums services said he was looking forward to working with Norfolk’s “world-class collections and stunning sites” when he begins the role in June.
Steve Miller will replace Vanessa Trevelyan, who will retire from the Museums and Archaeology Service at the end of this month.
The 42-year-old father-of-two has nearly 20 years experience in the cultural, heritage and tourism sectors in the UK. He comes to Norfolk having been chief executive of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust in Shropshire and director of the Norton Priory Museum Trust in Cheshire before that.
Mr Miller said: “I am very excited to be joining the prestigious Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service, with its world-class collections and its stunning sites.
“I look forward to working with councillors, staff, volunteers and partners in carrying the service forward to even greater heights.”
Barry Stone, county council cabinet member for cultural services, said: “I am really pleased that we have been able to secure Steve’s vision and experience, which will be of great benefit to our county’s museums and archaeology services.
“He has a strong track record across the museums and cultural sector in the UK and will be eager to help our hugely valued museums to become even more successful, ensuring that even more residents come and enjoy what we have on offer.”
Robin Hanley will take charge of the museums service until Mr Miller’s arrival.

As DR says Ted Ellis was a true Norfolk scientist. I unfortunately never met him but his late wife greated us with a huge kettle of tea. His books are a first read to understand the broadland system. That's how we do it in Norfolk. Nice people and extremely sincere in local knowledge.,.. and local curiousity, Sutton Hoo and many more.. I may even envy your job, but I'm too busy looking to the future..

I would hope for a curatorship with less emphasis on design and subjective interpretation and more on the content ; more exhibits related to Norfolk ( perhaps a return of the Norfolk geology displays), a calming down of the theme park approach eg no more smelly Iceni ponies, and more expectation that children are capable of being interested in exhibits without indulging the rampaging element. Keep the people who are interested in museums coming back, not deter them by dumbing everything down. At Gressenhall check the accuracy of what is going on at Union Farm ( the farmhouse garden was a joke last time I visited ) and hold back on the patronising red spotted kerchief version of our Norfolk agricultural past. Keep up the good work with the archaeology and the Museums service web site which is brilliant. We have good museums service, fingers crossed for the future. Oh and Hands off the Ted Ellis Room!

I hope he can learn how to do that tricky top button up before he arrives. Would be nice for him to look smart in his new job!

This sounds like a good appointment. Ironbridge is the historical place of the start of the industrial revolution. For Steve Miller to give that up for our wealth of pre and post glacial activity is a noble challenge... First job is to stop Natural Englands croonies from so called protecting our unique SSSIs e.g. Eastern Bavents,Pakefield and Pre 100 millinia deposits from being wash away. I can't believe NE protect these geological and fossil records by letting them erode. Good luck Steve. and yes you will find this area very interesting..
