The general manager of the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich has spoken of its future as the venue’s 2013 line-up of shows is announced.
Les Hoare confirmed that the theatre would not be appointing a new artistic director following the recent departure of Genevieve Raghu, and he said the theatre’s board was looking to review the organisation’s structure.
But he said a committee had decided on an exciting mix of shows for 2013 with a mix of professional and guest directors already in place to direct most of the productions.
He said: “Having put in place our 2013 season and received the commitment of an exceptional line-up of directors the board have decided that a full review as to how to structure ourselves for the future is appropriate.
“This review will look at the total and complex process of staging productions to ensure the high standards required are met now, and in the future, along with our visions (or aims) for the future. I will be working closely with directors and designers to ensure they are fully supported throughout.”
He said the review was not a result of financial issues.
“The theatre from a financial point of view is incredibly sound,” he said.
He said among the visions for the theatre are to maintain its position as one of the region’s leading producing theatres, provide tangible development opportunities for local artistic talent, support local artistic talent first, and involve young people, the local community and other charities.
• New shows for the Maddermarket Theatre
The Railway Children takes to the stage at the Maddermarket this month, and an intricate set design for the show is currently being constructed in the theatre’s workshop overseen by designer John Stokes.
Mr Stokes said his design was very theatrical and aiming to be as authentic as possible to the Edwardian era but said audiences should also expect the unexpected. The show, directed by Peter Sowerbutts, runs from December 19 to January 5.
Moving into 2013, the Norwich Players’ productions will be: Playhouse Creatures, God of Carnage, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Duet for One, Calendar Girls, London Assurance, The New Electric Ballroom, Rope, Now is the Hour, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Seagull, and The Snow Queen.
