A Lowestoft man who acted as a caretaker at a cannabis factory has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Andrew Entwistle, 53, of Waterloo Road, Kirkley, answered a knock at the door of a flat in Great Yarmouth to find police officers waiting to be let in, Ipswich Crown Court were told.

Robert Sadd, prosecuting, said that inside the premises in Louise Close, officers discovered 100 cannabis plants, hydroponic equipment, silver foil on the walls and also found the electricity meter had been bypassed,.

He said the plants had a potential street value of between £24,000 and £40,000.

Entwistle admitted being concerned in the production of cannabis in January and was given an eight month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work in the community.

Andrew Thompson, in mitigation, said Entwistle his client had been responsible for watering the plants for less than two weeks. He said he was now in work and was determined not to act so stupidly in the future.
