Paul Adams, former headteacher at Long Stratton High School, who has been dismissed for gross misconduct

A Norfolk headteacher dismissed for gross misconduct last night said he would be taking his case to an employment tribunal.

Paul Adams was suspended from his role at Long Stratton High School in September 2011. After a long investigation, it was yesterday revealed he had now been sacked.

In a statement Andrew Richards, vice chairman of governors at the school, said: “I can confirm that Dr Paul Adams, our former headteacher, has been dismissed for gross misconduct following an investigation into management issues at the school. We have been working closely with the county council to ensure we follow all of the correct procedures.

John Wilson will continue as acting headteacher until a permanent appointment is made.

Last night Dr Adams said he wanted to make it clear that the “management issues” related to a health and safety matter. He said he had appealed against the decision at the end of June this year but lost that appeal last Thursday.

He added: “I refute the allegations against me and as a result I have lodged a case for unfair dismissal with the employment tribunal. I am confident that I will win my case.”

Norfolk County Council last night confirmed that, in accordance with employment law, staff were suspended on full pay until the matter was resolved. A spokesman said costs were “borne by the employer” but was unable to confirm how much Dr Adams’ suspension had cost. An issue relating to another member of staff at Long Stratton High, suspended the day after Dr Adams, is ongoing.
