A Norwich woman has won a national competition to name a new blazing pink variety of rose.

Julie Yeomans suggestion 'Anniversary Splendour' beat 4,000 others to take top honours in the contest run by Notcutts Garden Centres, which has a branch in the Fine City.

Ms Yeomans won prizes including a specimen of the rose, £120 in gift vouchers, afternoon tea, a bottle of rosé and a pair of secateurs.

The name coincides with Norcutts' own 120th anniversary.

Nicky Dulieu, Notcutts chairman, said: 'We believe Anniversary Splendour is a natural fit for our celebratory rose. Many entries we received were dedicated to loved ones so we chose Anniversary Splendour as the perfect name to celebrate all special anniversaries, as well as our own this year.'

Another rose lover, Christine Trickett from Pontefract, suggested the same name and also won a prize.
