An inquest has been opened after a Norwich man died after falling from a bicycle in Cyprus.

Paul Knights, 60, from Hellesdon, died in Nicosia General Hospital on June 21, two days after he fell from his bicycle while on the way to the beach.

Norfolk's assistant coroner Johanna Thompson opened the inquest into his death of Mr Knights, who worked as an estimator, in Norwich today.

She said: 'It appears that on June 19, Mr Knights was cycling to the beach in Dhekelia Garrison, travelling downhill at speed.

'He hit a speed bump and fell from his bicycle, which resulted in severe head trauma and brain death.'

The inquest opening heard that a doctor at the hospital in Nicosia gave the cause of death of Norwich-born Mr Knights as craniocerebral injury, due to the fall from the bicycle.

The assistant coroner said further information was being sought, but that a review, ahead of an inquest, would take place in Norwich on October 5.
