A former senior Broadland Conservative has pledged to “get back into the thick of it” after switching to the Liberal Democrats today.

Kim Davis, who represents Thorpe St Andrew South East, stepped down from Broadland District Council’s cabinet last November after raising concerns related to a staff restructure.

Mrs Davis, previously known as Davis-Claydon, became an independent member before her move to the Lib Dems.

She said: “I always worked better with the Liberal Democrats. They leave party politics at the door and get on with doing a good job. I want to get back into the thick of it. The fact I can go back onto committees and contribute - I am quite excited by it.”

Nich Starling, Lib Dem group leader, added: “We are delighted to have someone that good, clearly that knowledgeable and has always treated the council as an inclusive thing, where everybody has a contribution to make.”

Mrs Davis’s switch means there are now 32 Conservatives, 13 Liberal Democrats, one Labour member and one vacancy.

A by-election for a seat in Blofield and South Walsham will take place on May 2 following the resignation of Conservative James Carswell.

  • bedoomed, if the make up of committees was at random and mixed, without being manipulated by the largest party to have a majority on every one of them, then that would be breath of fresh air.

  • Until the Cabinet system goes and you get committees with Councillors on them who have a real interest in that committee and it's not down to Buggins turn (no choice at all), we are all democratically poorer.

  • All the houses planned for the east of Norwich will need infrastructure for its effluent, so the councillor for Whitlingham is informing his electorate as we speak, of the expansion by a third and, maybe, an incinerator in the Yare valley. As long as these plans are kept in the dark and the electorate not informed, these possibilities have to be considered. Norfolk's trusting voters have been deceived, lets hope they can see that Kings Lynn is a pig in a poke. Can I just say how despicable I find it when Cllr.s going round touting postal voting forms, how desperate can you get?

  • If you look back to coverage of why Kim quit the Tories back in November you will see there is a VERY big difference between the local Tories and Lib Dems

  • The anti-Tory mood continues and some councillors can smell the coffee already.Only a few weeks until elections which could determine the PM's future. The Conservative party is looking at meltdown. That's what happens when a political party becomes toxic.

  • You might prefer the Libdems KD, but the smarter move would have been to UKIP.

  • Another indication that Norfolk's Conservative party is split, their reluctance to do as they said they would, their sham green façade and lack of democratic accountability and ideas is stark. Party politics at its worst, will the electors be asked of their views on these changes?

  • We will see more Tories jumping ship when the penny drops that Bill Borrett and Co have more wast incinerators on their agenda. That is why they don't tell you anything. Coltishall, Snetterton are not of the woods yet. Why do you think they have signed documents with Wheelabrator that the public are not allowed to see. The true cost of this stinking waste incinerator is hidden in secret documents. Vote for conservative you get waste incinerators across Norfolk. Conservative policy is. We ignore you and we do what we like with your money. We will burn it, we will slowly poison you, the environment and The Wash into the bargain.
