The mother of a Norfolk girl, who has a rare brain condition, spoke of her delight after hundreds of people attended a fundraising event to pay for her latest treatment abroad.
Ella-Grace Honeyman, from Hevingham, was diagnosed with the life-threatening Vein of Galen Malformation just four days before her first birthday in June 2008.
The seven-year-old celebrated her birthday at the weekend with an event to help pay for her latest surgery in America.
Her family launched a new fundraising appeal earlier this year to raise more than £20,000 for Ella-Grace’s latest surgery in New York.
Her mother Laura said the fundraising event at Sprowston Sports and Social Club today would go a long way to help raise the remaining funds needed for her eighth operation.
The fundraiser included entertainment from Charlie Cheesecake and Stevie Spud, singing, and baton twirlers. And there was a host of sports including a football tournament and pool and darts competitions.
Mrs Honeyman and her daughter will be flying to New York on July 21 for what is hoped to be Ella-Grace’s final brain surgery procedure.
“We hope so, but because of the uniqueness of the condition we do not know what will happen after the surgery. They have started doing it at Great Ormond Street Hospital. However, it is so rare and needs specialist teams and the New York team have been together for 20 years and have the biggest success rate,” she said.
The family are organising a bowl-athon and a Zumbathon in the next month to raise the last £7,000 needed for the latest treatment.
Mrs Honeyman added that she was pleased to see so many local people and friends and family at the Sprowston event, which was organised by her and friend Lisa Fisher.
“It is brilliant. We feared that no one would turn up, but from 11am, people have been here and it is nice to see so many friendly faces and it has a nice community feel. We wanted to aim it for families,” she said.
