Ros Lawrance, 60, was driving from Norwich to her home in Portalfield, Stalham in July 2014 - having just returned from a dream holiday.

But halfway home, in Coltishall, the car in front of Mrs Lawrance suddenly braked and her car smashed into it.

The impact was so violent Mrs Lawrance's car was catapulted across the carriageway, into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

So serious were Mrs Lawrance's injuries that the East Anglian Air Ambulance was called, and she was rushed to Addenbrookes Hospital, in Cambridge with a broken neck, pelvis and brain injuries.

Husband Chris, 60, a taxi driver, said: 'It was very much touch and go.

'To be honest, we thought we were going to lose her.'

Mrs Lawrance, who worked at John Lewis, added: 'I was lucky to survive the accident at all.

'The doctors didn't hold much hope and had a discussion about turning off the ventilator that was keeping me alive.'

After seven long weeks Mrs Lawrance was transferred to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, but just before Christmas had to move again to Sheffield's specialist spinal unit, where she spent the next three months relearning to walk.

She said: 'Being in hospital over the Christmas period is far from ideal, as the norm would be to spend this time with family and friends. But the staff in Sheffield were absolutely amazing.

'Their attitude was greatly appreciated by everyone on my ward, and I'm sure that the other patients would have said the same if they'd been asked.'

Since the tragedy the couple renewed their wedding vows after 30 years, but instead of gifts the pair asked all guests to make a donation to the air ambulance team and raised £490.00.

Today (Thursday) they presented the crew who worked to save Mrs Lawrance that day with the cheque.

Mr Lawrance said: 'Without the team from the air ambulance and the ongoing help and care of family and neighbours, we would not have survived this terrible event.

'Ironically, it has brought us closer as a couple as it goes to show just how strong we are'.
