Launch of Race for Life event in Norwich

Shoppers were urged to dance in the streets of Norwich to support an annual fundraising event for a cancer charity.

Almost 7,000 women took part in Race for Life, near Norwich, last year and raised £457,084 for cancer research.

Volunteers wearing bright pink t-shirts and Zumba dancers were on hand in Norwich city centre on Saturday to encourage women to take part in a ‘Cancer Slam’ and enter the women-only event for Cancer Research UK.

The 5k and 10k events will be held at the Norfolk Showground in Costessey on Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18.

Organisers are hoping that 7,300 women and girls will take part this year and help raise £471,997 for vital research.

Cancer Slam dances will be performed by thousands of women as part of the warm-up at every 280 Race for Life events around the UK this summer.

Gemma Turpin, Race for Life Norfolk events manager, said: “We’d like to thank Sarah-Jane and the Norfolk ladies for taking part in Cancer Slam and showing us how it’s done.”

“The Cancer Slam is a fun, defiant and energetic dance which epitomises the power and emotion of Race for Life and we urge women from across the region to get involved and unite in the fight against cancer.”

“Race for Life is non-competitive. It doesn’t matter how fit or fast you are. Taking part is about joining together against a disease that affects all of us. You can walk, run, dance, so we urge local ladies to take the first step by signing up.”

Race for Life started as one event in 1994 at Battersea Park with 680 participants.

Over the last 20 years, 7.1m participants across the UK have raised over £526m to fund Cancer Research UK’s work. Every day, 83 people are diagnosed with cancer in the East of England.

The entry fee is £14.99 for adults and £10 for girls under 16. This covers the costs of staging the event series and the money raised in sponsorship goes to research.
