Baby Oliver was a dream come true for a Norwich couple.
He is one of the first 1,000 babies born as a result of NHS-funded IVF treatment at Bourn Hall Clinic, based in Cambridge.
Since May 2009, the NHS has funded improved access to fertility treatment in the East of England, and this has helped make Bowthorpe couple Carey Barber, 27, and Mark Barber, 28, a mum and dad.
Born on February 27 this year, Oliver weighed 5lb 12oz.
Mum Carey said: “He was such a tiny, perfect little thing. The whole family was thrilled.”
The couple’s IVF treatment was successful at the first attempt in June 2011. Carey had 16 eggs collected and seven healthy embryos were produced.
One embryo was implanted, and Carey described the wait to find out if the treatment had worked as “the longest two weeks of my life.”
The wait ended in good news for her and Mark.
Carey said: “The test took three minutes to do its magic and I hardly dared look at it. When I saw it was positive I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry!
“I dashed back to the bedroom, woke Mark up and said ‘you’re never going to believe it, we are going to have a baby’.”
Bourn Hall has clinics in Colchester and Cambridge and is planning a new one in Wymondham next year.
The clinics provide a range of fertility treatment and work together with satellite clinics across the east.
Carey and Mark were able to attend their early appointments at the James Paget University Hospital in Great Yarmouth, and the couple were full of praise for the hospital staff there and also at Bourn Hall Clinic.
Carey said: “It can be a difficult time but everybody was absolutely amazing.”
She added: “Oliver is a real treasure to us.
“I think I appreciate him more because of the journey we had.”
