A care home in Great Yarmouth has been forced to close after watchdogs uncovered a catalogue of concerns.

Abbeville care home in Wellesley Road has been in and out of special measures for two years, most recently following an unannounced inspection in September.

A three-strong inspection team found beds were unclean, one patient had been given an incorrect dose of a high-risk drug, and expired eye-drops were in use.

There was also criticism of mealtimes, with one person falling asleep after eating one chip and then having their food taken away.

Relatives were told at a meeting at 5pm this evening (Tuesday) that the home would be closing.

Abbeville has 19 people in its care.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) report painted a bleak picture of life in the seaside home with residents often left with nothing to do.

One person said: 'Not much goes on. There's not enough outings in the nice weather. We missed the good weather this year.'

Another person said: 'We don't have much going on. There used to be bingo and quizzes. The staff member who used to do this is off so there's no-one to organise anything now.'

A third resident said: 'I've got a nice big room. There's not much point going downstairs because there is not much going on.

'At least if I stay here I've got my telly and I can watch what I like.'

Another commented: 'There is nothing to do all day usually.'

People seated in a lounge told inspectors that most of the activities displayed on a chart did not take place.

The same two people with mental health conditions were seen sat in the lounge all day with no stimulation in both April and September last year.

Meanwhile one person told inspectors that staff complained to them about their continence.

They said: 'I do wish they would stop moaning at me and understand that when I get the urge I can't help it and have to go there and then.'

During the visit inspectors had to intervene when a disagreement arose between a staff member and a resident over a cup of tea.

The resident said to the inspector afterwards: 'She's no carer, is she?'

A spokesman for Norfolk County Council said: 'Abbeville Residential Care Home has been unable to satisfy the Care Quality Commission (CQC) that it provides safe and good care over a number of recent inspections.

'As a result the CQC were proposing to cancel the home's registration.

'Rather than leave residents and families in a state of uncertainty about their future, the owner has taken the decision to close the home.

'There are currently 19 residents living at Abbeville Residential Care Home, 14 of them on Norfolk County Council (NCC) contracts, but officers from NCC will now be supporting all residents and families to find suitable alternative accommodation.

'While this process is underway staff at Abbeville will continue to provide support to residents.'

Abbeville was approached for comment.
