It’s a tough road to the top – but will someone’s X Factor journey begin in Great Yarmouth on Monday?

With public auditions now being held in smaller venues the cut and thrust of local debate is set to be ousted by the ITV juggernaut when it rolls into the resort’s imposing town hall scouting for talent.

Neighbouring Gorleston is already famous for producing Myleene Klass, Hannah Spearritt and chorister Alicia King and judges are said to be looking for another hopeful to take to singing stardom.

Yarmouth is the first of three towns to launch the search for the series 10 winner, with a mobile audition van and a proven pedigree.

Hundreds are expected to head to the quayside location to face the tough casting bear pit - the audition stage of the competition well-known for delivering brutal feedback and hammer-blows of disappointment.

This week stunned council staff were busy preparing for the influx of singing wannabes to the grand Assembly Room which will become the “holding pen” for those facing unknown production team judges.

Auditions will take place simultaneously in the ornate Supper Room which usually hosts a range of committee meetings and has a licence for weddings.

Anyone who is deemed good enough will be put forward to the judges’ tour stage in the summer, performing in front of the show’s celebrity critics including Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh for the televised sections.

Laura Goodman, mayoral and civic events officer at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said the TV company had made an approach looking for a venue and that the town hall had been her suggestion.

She said councillors and officials had jumped at the “bizarre” idea, and that it was a good opportunity to show off the recently revamped venue and highlight its versatility.

Simon Cowell’s X Factor has given the world the likes of Jedward and Wagner as well as Leona Lewis, with some names sinking without trace.

A spokesman for the X Factor said: “The mobile auditions allow budding artists to try out in towns and cities where the arena auditions tour doesn’t reach.

“Last year’s mobile auditions were a huge success with The X Factor 2012 winner James Arthur, being discovered at the audition in Middlesbrough. This year the mobile auditions are going to be bigger and better with three X Factor vans travelling across the UK in the hope of discovering the next big singing sensation.

The search will commence on Monday, launching in Warrington, Inverness and Great Yarmouth.

The mobile audition vans will continue to travel across the UK visiting numerous cities throughout the week.

He added there would be some filming in Yarmouth, but that footage would be unlikely to make it to the show.

The auditions at Great Yarmouth Town Hall will be 10am-3pm or until 4.30pm for anyone in full time education.
