The free evening session will give people the chance to take part in a swim test, which involves swimming 400m in seven minutes and 30 seconds, as well finding out what being a lifeguard involves.

Those people who impress will be offered the chance to be short-listed for an upcoming lifeguard course later this month and could find themselves working on Norfolk and Suffolk beaches this summer.

The try-outs take place this Sunday, August 3 at the Phoenix Swimming Pool in Bradwell, near Great Yarmouth at 6.45pm.

RNLI lifeguard supervisor Liam Fayle-Parr said: “These try-outs are a great chance for people to find out if they have the potential to become a lifeguard, without having to make any commitment at this stage.

“They can simply turn up, take our swim test and find out more about being a lifeguard.

“Those people who are strong enough swimmers will be offered the opportunity to take part in a course to get their lifeguard qualification later this month.

“And those who are not quite fit enough will be given advice on how to bring their swimming skills up to lifeguard standard.”

RNLI lifeguards in Norfolk and Suffolk are already having a busy summer.

In just one week, between 19 – 25 July, they carried out 11 rescues, assisted 28 people, gave first aid 40 times and found seven missing people.

Qualified lifeguards patrol beaches across our regions coast-line including sandy stretches in Cromer, Sheringham, Wells, Great Yarmouth, East Runton, Hesmby, Mundesly, Gorleston, Southwold and Lowestoft.
