A five-year-old chess whizz has been placed as runner-up in the Delancey UK Schools’ Chess Challenge Megafinal XVII - Norfolk Division
Oscar Ellis’s (pictured) success in this stage of the tournament qualifies him for July’s Northern Gigafinal.
He first became interested in chess at four years old when he visited Blickling Hall, near Aylsham, and saw a giant chess set there. He immediately found himself drawn to it and noticing his interest, his grandfather challenged him to a game.
He then went on to find a computer program that helped him learn some moves.
His parents also bought him a chess book for his fifth birthday and earlier this year he started to play regularly at Norwich Junior Chess Club.
The chess challenge was the first competition the Gresham’s School student had played in.
