She has always enjoyed gardening, but it was a hobby Wymondham's Joy Batley had to give up after she became a wheelchair user about seven years ago.

But now the green-fingered 66-year-old from Wymondham can once again enjoy growing things thanks to modifications made to an allotment she shares with her partner Les Ford off Chapel Lane in the south Norfolk town.

Thanks to the raised beds which Mr Ford made earlier this year, Mrs Batley has been growing cabbage, cauliflower and other vegetables.

She said: 'I used to have a big front garden and it's been really nice to be able to grow things again.'

Mr Ford said he had asked for advice from the allotment society and others before making the modifications, and he said it had attracted interest from other keen gardeners.

He said: 'It's very much an ongoing project and there are other things that will be able to do with it.'
