Greater Anglia has apologised to passengers and promised to find out why toilets were blocked and there was no running water in basins on a packed train from London to Norwich.
One passenger, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, tweeted his frustration at the situation and has accused the train company of not making enough effort with basic maintenance.
Care minister Mr Lamb had to stand from Liverpool Street to Manningtree on Thursday’s 7pm service.
“I wanted to wash my hands after having a tangerine. One toilet had no water, a second was out of order, a third was out of order, and a fourth was blocked.
“It was disgusting that these basic facilities weren’t working. It’s a basic issue of customer service and public health,” he said.
“It may be an issue of maintenance - they are not giving it enough attention.”
Mr Lamb said several people had answered his tweet and told him Greater Anglia had not responded to their similar complaints.
“I hope it’s not the case that MPs get a better response than other people,” he added.
An Abellio Greater Anglia spokesperson said they would investigate problems on the service.
She added: “We have been working to reduce the number of faults of this type to ensure we can provide customers with the facilities they expect from us. We are also undertaking a heavy maintenance programme followed by a ‘refresh’ of the carriages on the Norwich London trains both of which involve improvements to the on-train toilets.”
The firm welcomed customer feedback and aimed to respond and fully investigate any comments made.
