A Norwich youth performing arts venue is celebrating a new link with the prestigious Royal Opera House.
The Garage is one of three organisations across the country that have been picked to work alongside the Royal Opera House as part of the ROH Links scheme.
The Norwich based charity, which aims to support artists and young people at every stage of their development, was selected following a nationwide search undertaken in partnership with Arts Council England.
Well known for its provision of activities for children and young people, the city centre venue also presents a programme of professional touring theatre, classes, training and education for all ages as well as providing specialist facilities for use by hundreds of groups every week.
Darren Grice, chief executive of The Garage, said: “This is fantastic news for us and for Norwich.
“We are really proud of our local roots but we know that for us to deliver the very best for our communities, we need to be collaborating and learning with others nationally.
Being selected is a real credit to the quality of the work we are already doing, however benefiting from the expertise available in an organization like the Royal Opera House will help us develop significantly over the next twelve months”
ROH Links is one part of a broader scheme entitled ROH Connections which is offered by the Royal Opera House to arts organizations to support them by sharing knowledge, experience and skills.
Over the next year, The Garage could benefit from mentoring, training, expertise, placements, knowledge sharing and increased profile by working alongside ROH. Other participants announced for this year are Mid Wales Opera based in Newton Powys and Farnham’s Stopgap Dance Company.
Alex Beard, chief executive of the Royal Opera House, said: “I am delighted that we are entering into a relationship with three very different organisations for the second year of this scheme.
“I know that we have gained enormously from our association with the first three companies we have partnered with and this combination of touring opera and dance companies and an arts venue has been a good mix for the first year of ROH Links.
“We now have a clearer idea how we can best assist the companies and we are always hungry to learn from their experiences too. It also demonstrates in another way how we are contributing more widely as a resource for the nation.”
