Plucky baby Ryan Wright, who has been battling cancer, shook off an infection and made it home to spend Christmas with his family in North Walsham.
Seventeen-month-old Ryan was allowed home from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on Saturday, according to his mum, Hayley.
“He’s doing really well. He’s still on antibiotics and has to go back to hospital daily but we had an absolutely wonderful Christmas. He really enjoyed his day,” said Mrs Wright, 32, of Fairview Road.
Ryan’s brothers, Keenan and Ethan, had loved having their little brother at home and Ryan had spent a lot of time playing with new toys based on his favourite character, Mickey Mouse, Mrs Wright added.
Ryan had returned home earlier in December after his latest course of gruelling chemotherapy at Addenbrooke’s Hospital following the removal of a tumour from his adrenal gland.
But he had picked up an infection and had to return to the Norfolk and Norwich shortly before Christmas.
On Boxing Day the whole family had gone along to Walcott beach to watch three volunteers - Julie Fitches, Jason Howard and Chris - plunge into the North Sea in aid of the Ryan Wright Appeal, which is raising money for specialist treatment in Germany should Ryan’s neuroblastoma cancer return and the NHS be unable to help.
The family had also been overwhelmed to learn that North Walsham Round Table’s fund-raising Santa’s sleigh, which toured the town in the run up to Christmas, had exceeded its £5,000 target in aid of the appeal by more than £1,000.
“I was absolutely speechless - I can’t thank them enough, or the people of North Walsham who have supported us,” said Mrs Wright.
Supporters are now preparing for an auction and raffle on New Year’s day at Castaways Holiday Park, Bacton.
Lots include breakfast for 12 at North Walsham’s Café Kitale, a full car valet from Crayfords and Abbs, an Ann Summers voucher, a family voucher for Cromer’s pavilion theatre. a family ticket for Bewilderwood, and a night’s stay at Holiday Inn, Norwich. Entry is free. The bar opens at 6pm and the auction begins at 8pm.
