A city centre pub has reopened and will soon be known under its old name – after it failed to attract a fan base as a bar/bistro.

The Westlegate, in All Saints Green near the John Lewis store, has reopened and it will soon be renamed the Pig and Whistle.

Simon Carpenter, a former manager at Riley’s snooker club in Magdalen Street, Norwich, has taken it on as leaseholder and his brother Adam, wife Claire and mother Sue are also helping out.

To attract customers, the pub, which is owned by Enterprise Inns, is offering people working in the surrounding area 15pc off food and drinks, if they can prove who their employers are.

Mr Carpenter said: “The previous people ran it from 8am to 8pm. But we think that trying to get people in for breakfast is a bad idea, so we will be open from 11am to 11pm weekdays and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

“Downstairs will be a more rustic pub-cum-restaurant while, upstairs, the former Mustard Lounge nightclub will be a sports lounge with pool and darts and a function room.”

Older readers might remember the venue as Imagine or Chandlers, but it enjoyed its biggest success as the Pig and Whistle.

  • The new "owners" of this pub are in fact leaseholders, the real owners apparently being that philanthropic organisation, Enterprise Inns. Give it 6 months? Steward & Patteson, affectionately known as "S&P" which is what it made you do! Preferred Morgans myself.

  • Am I disremembering it, or did it have a spell as "Wig and Pistle" or something similar?
