Former EastEnders star Michelle Ryan is to star in the musical Cabaret when it comes to Norwich Theatre Royal later this year.
Ms Ryan, who played Zoe Slater in the BBC soap opera for five years, is joining singer Will Young in the show which comes to the city in September.
The production turns Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a sassy, sizzling haven of decadence, and at its dark heart are the notorious Emcee (Will Young) and sassy Sally Bowles (Michelle Ryan), who perform nightly at the infamous Kit Kat Klub.
As well as EastEnders, Ms Ryan has played the title role in US show The Bionic Woman. She has also appeared in television dramas including Mansfield Park and Jekyll, and has appeared in Miss Marple, Merlin and Doctor Who. Cabaret is at the theatre from September 17 to 22. This is going to be one to miss in my humble opinion. Having seen several attempts for a launch of her career since Eastenders, most people seem to agree that she is pretty wooden and bland as an actress. She failed to do anything in America when she tried. I don't see her coping with the iconic role that is Sally Bowles. Saying that this production by Rufus Norris has been done to death over the last six years. It has had a string of low key celebs in the main roles and it all ended up quite sad. I want a new production of Cabaret to knock my socks off, not the same direction, design and a second rate telly cast.
