It was a business set up with a simple goal in mind – to offer customers doorstep deliveries of the freshest and best seasonal food from local farms and producers.
Now Norfolk’s start-up online food retailer StonesThrow Food Co. is reaching a major milestone for the early May bank holiday weekend as it celebrates a full and successful first year of trading.
It was the brainchild of local entrepreneur, Richard Walters, who wanted to know more about his food – how and where it was grown, reared or produced, how it reached the supermarket and how long it was on the shelf. Keen for his family to have fresh, local, healthy and seasonal produce, all delivered to his door, he saw a gap in the market he believed he could fill to make purchasing local food (just a stone’s throw from where customer lives) simpler and more cost-effective, providing a real alternative to the supermarket, championing local suppliers and supporting the local economy.
Last May the company was ready to go, working with a number of trusted local suppliers, and its own delivery van and very quickly it had its first customer – Philippa Rudd.
He said: “Starting a new business is full of challenges and it hasn’t been all plain sailing, but at StonesThrow we passionately believe in the concept of our business and we’re doing incredibly well and have a very busy few months ahead of us.
“In fact, we are currently expanding our small team – it feels great to be recruiting as this is a positive sign of how well StonesThrow has been received in the marketplace.
“We have also taken on an additional delivery van too. On our busiest day we made 45 deliveries, mainly in and around Norwich but we also deliver across much of Norfolk and into Suffolk too. We now stock many local products including cheese, meat, fish and game, beer, ice cream, handmade fudge, preserves, oils and fresh juice right through to those everyday items you still need to get like bin liners and toilet rolls and we even stock frozen food, ready meals and baby food.”
The business marked its first birthday alongside some of its valued customers and local suppliers who enjoyed a slice of a very special carrot cake, made by Peter McBurnie, the Elveden Estate development chef, using fresh, local ingredients of course, including carrots from Fresh Approach in Aylsham and eggs from Top Farm Eggs in Great Snoring.
Philippa Rudd said: “I train for Ironman competitions and marathons, so the nutritional value of the food I choose is incredibly important.
“When placing the weekly food shop we often browse the StonesThrow website – it is so easy to use and we can get recipes, find out more about some of the producers and there’s usually a special offer to tempt us too.”
