A Norfolk MP has challenged people to test their numerical skills on World Maths Day.

Former maths teacher Simon Wright said: “Fewer than one in four adults have a working understanding of maths at a level above the equivalent of a C grade at GCSE.

“It’s vital to address this because improving numeracy skills has advantages for individuals and for society as a whole. Those who are numerate tend to find work more easily, earn more when they’re in work, and manage their finances effectively.”

He said too many people of all ages do not have confidence in maths, and even joke about being ‘no good’ at maths.

He added: “It doesn’t have to be this way. There is no ‘maths gene’ – everyone can do maths and everyone can take steps to improve their skills. It’s not always easy, but perseverance pays.

“That’s why a few days ago, I took the National Numeracy Challenge. This new initiative aims to improve the numeracy of at least a million adults over the next five years.

“Anyone can have a go at the challenge online, and track their progress over time. Its official launch is today, World Maths Day - so why not take a few minutes now and be one of the first to take part?”
