Pupils from Arden Grove Infant School were first out of the blocks as they got Sport Relief up and running for 2014.
The sporty youngsters welcomed Team Honk, a team of bloggers taking a Sport Relief baton from Land’s End to John O’Groats, and then clocked up five miles to help the team towards its target of raising £20,000.
The baton was then taken to Fitness Express at Hethersett, where the Norwich Team Honk members covered a further 60 miles on treadmills and bikes so that the baton can resume its journey from Cambridge today.
The event was the idea of parent Clare Anderson, who connected with Team Honk on social media and asked the Hellesdon school if it wanted bring its Sport Relief fundraising event forward.
She said: “It would have been such a shame for the school to miss out.
“Some of the children have already said ‘I’m never going to forget this’. We’ve been having collections in each classroom to raise money.
“They all have the recollection of the Olympic Torch coming past the school and they were all really excited at the idea.”
Children from Year 1 were led through a musical warm-up in assembly before kicking off the relay with laps of the playing field, covering a mile between the two classes.
Other schools are now being encouraged to join in the Sport Relief effort this year, ahead of the Sport Relief Games weekend from March 21 to 23, when Team Honk are due to arrive at John O’Groats.
Headteacher Daniel Thrower said: “The children and staff have had a fantastic time.
“It was a lovely opportunity brought to us by Jacob’s mum and we were delighted to help.”
The Aleks Leimanis, schools and youth manager at Comic Relief, urged schools to take part again this year.
“Schools and nurseries are some of the best fundraisers for Sport Relief and we are hugely grateful for their continued dedication and hard work,” she said.
