A member of the British Paralympics team has been honoured for overcoming disability to achieve sporting and academic success.

Wymondham College sixth form student Amy Ottaway was a member of Team GB's goalball during the Paralympic Games in London this summer.

The Ralphs Medal is awarded annually to a college student who exemplifies the words of Sir Lincoln Ralphs, 'Triumph through adversity.'

Melvyn Roffe, Wymondham College principal, said the student had skilfully combined the demands of international competition and training, with her A Level studies. She will finish her A Levels in English and Politics this year following the excitement of the Paralympic Games.

He said: 'Amy Ottaway has shown great determination and has been an inspiration to many throughout her time at Wymondham College. As a Year 7 student, she entered the National Cross Country Championships for her B4 sight category, and with her Sixth Form guide runner she surprised us all, and perhaps herself, when she came first.'

'As she grew up, Amy developed her sporting interests, first in rowing and then in the comparatively unknown sport of goalball. Amy took to goalball readily and rapidly training hard and working to improve her fitness to secure her place in the GB squad.'

'The London 2012 Paralympic Games have so far been the pinnacle of Amy's sporting career. The penalty that she took in the game against Denmark was the high point of an extraordinary few days.'
