Head ‘thrilled’ after Ofsted inspectors rate Norwich school good

The headteacher of a junior school in Norwich has said she is “thrilled to bits” today (Friday) after it maintained its good Ofsted report.
White Woman Lane Junior School, in Sprowston, was rated good by inspectors, who found pupils ‘actively engaged with learning’.
Headteacher Ashley Best-White said: “Everyone has worked really hard to sustain this good level. It was lovely for the inspectors to recognise that.
“We are all thrilled to bits really.”

The 10-page report, published this month, highlighted achievements in maths, English, and reading and writing standards. It also praised the behaviour and safety of pupils, marking it outstanding.
The report said: “Achievement in mathematics and English is good. Reading standards are significantly above average and writing levels are improving.
“Pupils’ skills in literacy and numeracy are reinforced well.
“In almost all lessons, pupils are actively engaged with learning and very excited by the work on offer. This has a strong effect on ensuring good, and often better, progress.
“Pupils spoke of school being ‘fun’ and said that they enjoy lessons.
“Attendance is high and rising. It reflects pupils’ engagement with the school’s work and their appreciation of the high levels of pastoral care offered.”
Inspectors said the school, off White Woman Lane, fell short of achieving an overall outstanding rating because ‘a small amount of teaching requires improvement’.
It also said pupils were not ‘consistently encouraged to take their learning to a more challenging level’ and that feedback on pupils’ improvements was ‘sometimes not timely or explicit enough’.
But teaching standards were praised as ‘good’ and the spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of learning were described as ‘well developed’.
Mrs Best-White, who has been headteacher at the school since 2001, said: “The value of the school is that we respect each other - it is a two-way process between the staff and the children.
“We try to make our curriculum fun and the children respond to that.”
She also praised the “good work” of the pupils, staff and school governors.
