The principal of a Great Yarmouth primary school has been suspended following an altercation in a pub.

Kimberley Morton, principal of Cobholm Primary Academy in Cobholm, Great Yarmouth, has been suspended pending an investigation into an incident which happened last week.

Miss Morton, who took over the Inspiration Trust-led school in late 2015, was given an automatic suspension after an incident was reported to the Trust.

The incident occurred on Friday, September 8 at Quay Pride on South Quay Road, involving drinks being thrown over a regular customer of the quayside venue.

Inspiration Trust spokesman James Goffin said: 'We can confirm that Miss Morton has been suspended pending an investigation into an incident at Quay Pride pub on Friday.

'This is an automatic suspension under our disciplinary procedure to allow the investigation to take place.'

A statement from Justin Margetts, Quay Pride co-owner, said: 'We are shocked and saddened by the behaviour of an individual in the bar on the evening of Friday, September 8.

'Following an altercation with a regular customer a woman was asked to leave the premises after throwing a drink over a customer. She then proceeded to throw two further drinks and glasses and was escorted off the premises.

'Quay Pride is known for its welcoming atmosphere. This isolated act is uncommon for us and we are disappointed that the ethos in our venue was not respected on this occasion.'

Miss Morton will remain suspended from the school until a full investigation into the incident has been carried out.

Cobholm Primary Academy, on Mill Road, became part of the Inspiration Trust after academising in December 2014, along with Stradbroke Primary in Gorleston.

The Trust is also responsible for Great Yarmouth Charter Academy, which became an academy this August, bringing with it a new set of school rules which have sparked a great deal of debate in the community.

Prior to taking over as principal at Cobholm, Miss Morton was assistant principal at Norwich Primary Academy in Earlham, the school she attended as a child.

Quay Pride has been in the town for just coming up to a year, having opened on October 22, 2016.
