Parents made their views clear about the potential closure of a popular primary school at consultation events held to help decide its future.

Governors have recommended the closure of Eccles, Hargham and Wilby Primary School, saying: “A continued decline in pupil numbers and changes to school funding are making it increasingly difficult to manage the budget and to bring about sustained improvement in educational outcomes for its pupils.”

As of January this year, the Church of England school in Wilby Road, Eccles had just 27 pupils on its roll.

Norfolk County Council invited parents and interested parties to a consultation event last Thursday to give their views, with a second event last night.

Sonia Humphries’ son Elliott attends the school. She is also organiser of Parents Against Closing Eccles School.

“Living rural is our choice and I certainly do not feel that our son is deprived in any way because he attends a small school,” she said after the first consultation.

“This school is an excellent foundation of education. Children that have attended Eccles in the past have gone on to university and to have very successful careers today.

“Promotion of this wonderful hidden treasure of a school is vital and I will do everything I can to help this wonderful school, where the staff are so dedicated.”

She added that she believed there “needs to be a new governing body, new ideas and lots of enthusiasm”.
