Cavell Primary academy conversion to continue as interim governors respond to consultation outcome

The interim governors of a school at the centre of a row over it becoming an academy will press on with conversion, having reviewed the outcome of a consultation with parents.

Cavell Primary in Duckett Close, Norwich, is due to become an academy under the Right for Success Trust, based at Eaton Hall Specialist Academy, on July 1.

The anti-academy Save Cavell campaign presented a petition with more than 2,000 signatures opposing the plans to the Department for Education last month.

The school’s interim executive board (IEB) said 17 people responded to its consultation, which did not include a question directly asking whether they supported academisation.

Nine respondents said it was not a “proper consultation”, two said it was too late, and six responses questioned if responses will make any difference and complained that views were not being taken into account.

Seven said that as the school is no longer in special measures, it does not need to become an academy.

The IEB said it took advice to ensure that it followed the correct procedures for the consultation, and acted upon all the advice that it was given. It added that being an academy was “the most appropriate [way] to ensure the support required for the school is provided to enable it to continue to improve and become a strong and successful school”.

Rachel Ward (pictured), of the Save Cavell campaign, pointed to its own survey, which 55 people completed, of whom 9pc supported the school becoming an academy, and 83pc supported it joining a co-operative trust formed by neighbouring schools.
