More than 40 teachers, parents and students attended a Question Time-style debate about education issues at City of Norwich School tonight.

Panellist Clive Lewis, Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for Norwich South, said any Labour government elected in next year's election would not get rid of academies and free schools.

However, he said he wanted his party to stop more academies and free schools, and look at bringing existing ones under local control.

Parent Rachel Ward spoke about the campaign against the academisation of Cavell Primary school in Norwich, and another panellist, Green county councillor Richard Bearman, asked why Mick Castle, the Labour cabinet member for education, has not stopped its academisation.

The National Union of Teachers, which organised the meeting. said the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties had said they would send speakers, but did not.
