People living at the run-down Earlham House complex in Norwich are being urged to contact their MP with their views ahead of tomorrow’s public meeting, amid signs that construction work soon could start at the site.

Earlier this week building equipment was left on the car park at the complex in Earlham Road, although Bellgold Properties Ltd, which owns the freehold to the site, has not confirmed if and when work will start.

Tomorrow’s meeting has been set up by the State (Standing together against the evictions) campaign to support 40 tenants of Earlham House who face eviction in under two months’ time by Bellgold.

It follows a meeting of tenants and leaseholders last Friday which was attended by Labour and Green party city councillors, and was followed by a demonstration against the new site owners outside the complex the following morning.

Norwich South MP Simon Wright was criticised for not attending that meeting, but afterwards said he had not been invited or informed about it.

He will be at tomorrow’s meeting and has invited residents, including those who cannot be at the meeting, to contact him with their views.

He said: “I share the extreme disappointment and anxiety felt by tenants at Earlham House who are facing an uncertain future through no fault of their own. I have on numerous occasions written to the succession of owners of Earlham House calling for improvements to the site. The issue of eviction notices, however, is a huge step backward in the saga and is deeply concerning.”

Mr Wright wants repairs and improvements to be made at the flats, but said they should be carried out in the best interests of residents – not against them. He added: “I have written to Bellgold calling for a meeting with them as a matter of urgency to discuss my concerns and those of many constituents who have contacted me.

“Ultimately, we all need to work together in the best interests of the residents of Earlham House. If party political games are allowed to get in the way, then everyone stands to lose.”

Clive Lewis, Labour parliamentary candidate for Norwich South, has also called for the issue to be above party politics.

Norwich City Council last month approved Bellgold’s proposals to replace windows, doors and enclose balconies at the 84 flat-complex.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be held at 7pm at Parkside School, College Road.
