A driver was fighting for his life in hospital today following a serious accident on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.

A blue Renault Kangoo van and a white Mercedes box van were in collision on the A143 at Earsham, near Bungay, at about 2.45pm on Thursday.

The male driver of the Renault suffered multiple broken bones and head and chest injuries. He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, by air ambulance.

Today a spokesman for Norfolk police described his condition as “critical”.

The road was closed for several hours and not re-opened to 10.10pm.

Police officers investigating the accident have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The Renault was travelling south towards Diss and the Mercedes north towards Bungay at the time of the collision.

Officers want to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or the manner of the driving of the vehicles beforehand.

Three vehicles stopped at the scene but left before police arrived and officers want to trace the occupants.

These are a silver estate car with the partial registration AY52; a small white car being driven by a nurse; and a convertible with two male occupants.

Anyone who has information is asked to contact Pc Wendy Frary at Wymondham Roads Policing on 101.
