Diss will be celebrating its own royalty at the weekend when the annual carnival procession makes its way through town.
Carnival King Oliver Pilsbury-Gaunt, 18, who organised the town’s jubilee festivities, will be joined by the procession’s Queen Lucy Davies, 18, as the parade snakes through the town centre on Sunday before finishing at Diss Town FC’s Brewers Green Lane ground where there will be games, events and stalls during the afternoon.
Doreen Collins, one of the carnival organisers, hoped 25 to 30 floats would participate in the parade through the town, which will start from Roydon Road before heading along St Nicholas Street and then the wrong way down Market Hill and Mere Street, which will be closed to traffic.
The celebrations will kick off from midday with dancing from the Hoxon Hundred.
The procession will then wind along Park Road before heading back up Denmark Street to the football ground, arriving at approximately 2.30pm.
Mrs Collins said the theme of the carnival parade was countries of the world and she was expecting floats representing the United States, France, China and England among other nations.
On the football ground, there will be a stalls, including Go Ape Thetford Forest which will be showcasing its range of Segways as a way of getting around the forest.
Visitors will be able to have a go at bungee trampolining and there will be petanque and a demonstration of circus tricks by local entertainer Bazza Bizarre.
Drama group The Keeper’s Daughter, which regularly performs at Diss Corn Hall, will be putting on impromptu shows around the football ground and there will be a barbecue and music from a pipe band.
Mrs Collins said: “The weather has been a bit hit and miss lately, but I am hoping it will be good for the parade and festivities.”
Carnival celebrations will kick off with the traditional Proms in the Park event and crowning of the carnival King and Queen on Saturday with music from the South Norfolk Symphonic Youth Band and singing from Discord from 5.45pm.
