The steam train due to take 200 Norwich passengers to Salisbury this morning - costing up to £220 per ticket - was cancelled because of a dispute with the drivers’ union.

The Cathedral Express train, which was due to leave Norwich station at 8.33am this morning, was cancelled after the train’s operating company DB Schenker had a dispute with the union Aslef.

Steam Dreams, the company who run the Cathedral Express service, said they were “very disappointed” and are trying to get a new date to re-run the same train.

Passengers were told late on Tuesday that they would no longer be able to travel to the Wiltshire city.

Simon Weller, the national organiser for Aslef, said the problem was down to “severe driver shortages” at DB Schenker.

Workers at Norwich Station reported just one passenger who arrived at the station unaware of the changes.

A spokeswoman for the company stressed that it was out of the company’s hands and added that refunds would be available for customers who want one.

A DB Schenker Rail spokesman said: “We have offered a 3.1pc pay rise for train drivers. This offer has been rejected by ASLEF, who have taken industrial action. We remain available to hold talks with ASLEF in order to agree solutions that would avoid further industrial action.”
