The deadline to nominate your local sporting heroes for this year’s Norfolk Sports Awards is fast approaching.
The awards, backed by the Eastern Daily Press and BBC Radio Norfolk, aim to showcase the legacy of the Olympic Games a year on from the successful summer of London 2012.
The cream of Norfolk’s sporting achievement and service will be honoured at the seventh Active Norfolk Sports Awards next month, and the closing date for nominations is 5pm on Monday.
Vicki Hall, of Active Norfolk, said: “We’ve had a really good response so far, near enough 300 nominations, but the thing I want to stress is that it is about quality not quantity.
“You can vote for your choice 100 times but if you only write one sentence about why then that is not going to help the judges make their decisions on the information they are provided, particularly if it is for the Unsung Hero Award.
“But there has been a real wide range of nominations come in. It’s interesting because year to year you see some people come up regularly but, especially with the young people, you don’t realise just how much sporting talent there is in the county.”
Nominations are open across nine categories:
Sports Personality of the Year
Young Sports Personality of the Year
BBC Unsung Hero Award
Inspirational Sports Personality
Community Coach of the Year
Community Club of the Year
Sports School of the Year
Sporting Village of the Year
Fit4Work Sporting Business of the Year
An overall Active Norfolk Winner of Winners will then be picked from the individual category winners.
Last year that award went to Belton Paralympic swimmer Jessica-Jane Applegate, who won the gold medal in the S14 200m freestyle at London 2012.
The 17 year old also took home last year’s Young Sports Personality of the Year award.
The 2013 Norfolk Sports Awards will be held at the Forum in Norwich on Wednesday, November 6.
Over 250 people are expected to attend the ceremony, with tickets now available for £15, including wine and canapes.
