A creative crown-making competition provided a quirky twist to the final events of Southwold’s jubilee celebrations.

Revellers may have been recovering from the explosive scenes on Monday night when fireworks, cannon fire, and the jubilee beacon created a dazzling display near Sole Bay.

But party-goers still mustered up enough jubilee spirit to keep the festivities going yesterday with kite flying displays, paddleboat races, and the town’s traditional beating of the bounds.

Down at Southwold Pier, people were invited create their own royal crown for a competition judged in the afternoon. Peter Websdale picked a seaside theme for his royal head gear, which came complete with a bucket, ice cream cones and union flags.

Meanwhile, Arianne Churchman took inspiration from the Queen’s iconic pets to shape her Corgi crown.

Stephen Bournes, owner of the pier, who organised a host of traditional events over the bank holiday weekend, said: “We thought we would aspire to the festivities and have some fun for the jubilee.

“Our operations manager made a crown out of a scone mixture and filled it with marshmallows – it is all about getting in the jubilee spirit and celebrating this great county, and great country.”
