A north Suffolk town is set to get its own speedwatch team to help combat motorists speeding on approaches to the town.

PCSO Ben Oswick, of Suffolk police, is co-ordinating a speedwatch group for Eye, which will be responsible for ensuring drivers adhere to the 30mph speed limits around town.

Eye mayor Merlin Carr said the plan was to recruit 19 volunteers who would patrol areas around the town which are yet to be identified, though these could include the approach from Diss, as well as Victoria Hill and Castleton Way.

He added: “I think it should be a good positive step forward for the town to show that local people don’t want people speeding through the town.”

He added he did not think there was a particular problem with speeding in Eye, though the town had places where speeding could be a problem, in common with other towns and villages.

The speedwatch initiative involves volunteers going out in groups of six with speed guns.

One of the volunteers acts as the coordinator and is the point of contact for the team and responsible for looking after the radar equipment. The groups are issued with a speed radar gun, two community speed watch signs and reflective jackets.

Volunteers then carry out speed checks in 30 and 40mph limits working to police guidelines and record the registration numbers of offending vehicles.

These details are then sent to the police, who will send the offenders a letter warning them about their speeding. Persistent speeding motorists could face legal action.

  • And yet another waste of time and money, to distract from the fact that our police forces are being cut and replaced with volunteers and ultimately privatisation.
