Police officers from Norfolk have been drafted into help colleagues in Essex as they continue to investigate two brutal murders.

Detectives in Essex are currently investigating the murder of Saudi Arabian student Nahid Almanea, 31, who was stabbed 16 times on a footpath in Colchester last Tuesday as well as the death of James Attfield, 33, who was stabbed 102 times in a “senseless and frenzied” attack two months ago.

Detective chief superintendent Steve Worron said the cases “remain separate but parallel investigations at this time”. “However, the circumstances of both crimes mean that we must consider the possibility that the same killer or killers are responsible,” he added.

A spokesman for Essex Police confirmed officers from Norfolk as well as Suffolk and other parts of the eastern region as well as the Met had been brought in as part of the mutual aid agreement.

The spokesman said most of the officers brought in from other areas were carrying out “reassurance patrols” in the area as there were currently two unsolved murders in the area.

A 19-year-old man arrested in connection with Ms Almanea’s murder was released yesterday.
