A man has been arrested after at least one person was struck by a car in a Norwich hit and run.

It happened in Aylsham Road, outside the row of shops which includes Kerrison's and Boundary Fish Bar, at about 11.50pm on Friday night.

A witness said a group of men were crossing the road, when a black Audi, which was initially heading out of the city turned around and headed towards them.

The witness, who did not want to be named, said: 'The driver must have been going at 20 to 30mph and one of the people went over the bonnet. You could hear the thud and then he was out on the ground and people were around him.

'A couple of other people had been clipped and they were walking wounded.

'The ambulance and the police got there very quickly. The one who went over the bonnet went off in the ambulance, but the driver of the car had disappeared.'

Police confirmed that they had gone to the scene. They said the person who was taken to hospital was believed to have suffered only minor injuries.

They said the vehicle initially made off from the scene, but was located by officers.

Police said the person who was believed to be the driver of the vehicle had been detained and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Anyone with information should call Norfolk police on 101.
