A Great Yarmouth policeman has been handed a national award for his work to help tackle underage and street drinking in the town.

Sergeant Dan Smith, part of the Great Yarmouth Operational Partnership Team, was presented with an award for excellence at a ceremony at the House of Lords.

Sgt Smith is one of the key driving forces behind Yarmouth’s Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP), which works to address alcohol abuse and the issues surrounding it.

The CAP was launched in April 2012 and has proved a success, helping to half street drinking in the town.

Made up of partner groups, including the police, trading standards, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, The Salvation Army, supermarkets and NHS health teams, the CAP meets on a regular basis to thrash out schemes and initiatives to target alcohol abuse.

Through its work the partnership has built close links with off-licences and carried out regular checks, executed dispersal orders in problem areas, trained staff at retail premises, held a number of public awareness days, engaged with schools, youth clubs and local hospitals and supported individuals.

Inspector Nick Cheshire said: “As we reach the two year point, a full evaluation will be carried out as to how effective the CAP has been but we know that a lot of people have put a lot of work into the scheme and Dan has been at the forefront of this with a number of other key players within the partnership.

“We are pleased that his efforts and hard work have been recognised at a national level.”

Sgt Smith was presented with his award by Baroness Helen Newlove, a leading campaigner against the UK’s binge drinking culture and chair of CAPs across the country.

Together with communities secretary Eric Pickles she launched the Yarmouth CAP in 2012.
