Armed police were called to Hellesdon this afternoon after police received reports of a distressed man with a knife inside a house.

Officers were called to Rosalie Close in Hellesdon at about 12.20pm after a member of the public raised concern for the welfare of a neighbour.

The man, in his 50s, was aggressive towards officers and was seen to be in possession of a kitchen knife, resulting in armed units attending the scene. Colleagues from the ambulance service were also called to assist.

Police forced entry to the property and the man was tasered and restrained, allowing paramedics to treat him. He was detained and taken to hospital for treatment.

Speaking after the incident, Detective Chief Inspector Ross McDermott said: “The man was very distressed and it became apparent to officers that he was in need of urgent medical treatment for self-inflicted injuries.

“He has been taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in a stable condition and I would like to reassure local residents that there was no threat to the wider community at any time during the incident.”
